Ainsley's Donkey

The Donkey Cake was not an easy order--but it was one of the most fulfilling.  I love making celebration cakes.

Initially, my husband and kids said it looked like a bunny--the ears and lack of a muzzle didn't help.  With a few modifications, we were on a roll.  I detailed the final pieces with eyelashes and and a mane and voila!  Donkey cake!  Who knew she'd be just perfect for the birthday girl??

Donkey Cake

I created a carved cake last weekend that was all cake. No rice cereal head or inedible pieces to supplement. I believe that putting together a designer cake should be creative and be...well, cake. It's not easy I admit. But it's possible.

I cut out mini-fondant flowers and made a pink bow -- all out of pre-colored rolled fondant.

I began with the simple ingredients for the carrot cake and the vanilla cake base.  Prepared the Italian Meringue Buttercream recipe and colored my frosting gray and green.  I left a fair amount white just in case of an emergency.

That face...just priceless.

That face...just priceless.

I still love her teeth.     Thanks for the opportunity, Melanie.     - SB
